Portraiture has always been and continues to be the main motivation for me to paint. The fractured and overlapping nature of my work is usually to convey a sense of life and movement over time, and to explore the relationship between traditional painting and technology using 'glitches'. Utilising this aesthetic has pushed me to paint scenes I hope make onlookers question the emotions of the subject and their relationship to the environment I choose to place them in, with themes such as identity and existentialism permeating throughout.
I love acrylic paint, I tend to work fairly quickly, and always work by building layer upon layer, so acrylic paint's fast drying nature works perfectly for me. I also like the often dull effect they emit when too many colours are mixed, as they tend to mimic the quality of basic photography or film with natural lighting. Film has a huge influence on me, to compensate for my lack of camera knowledge I try to be a director in my paintings. This means planning a scene, composing the shot and deciding what would happen over a length of time.
